Psalms 31:3 – David’s Recognition (Part 1)

INTRODUCTION TO OUR SERIES:

Throughout the years, this Psalm, or portions of it, have been a great blessing to me in several difficult situations that I have faced in life. Although, the Psalm does not reveal to us the exact situation that David was facing, it is obvious he was facing a very difficult hardship that, from his perspective, appeared to be insurmountable.

Throughout our lives as Christians, most, if not all of us, have faced the same type of issues. This Psalm gives us many wonderful truths that will give us comfort, hope, and even joy in the midst of these hardships of life.

This is the basic outline we will be using… our devotional will be covering approximately one verse per day…

1. David’s Request (1-2)

2. David’s Recognition (3-4)

3. David’s Commitment (5-8)

4. David’s Sufferings (9-13) (Due to his sin 9-10; Due to other’s sin 11-13)

5. David’s Faith (14-16)

6. David’s Desire (17-18)

7. David’s Praise (19-22)

8. David’s Exhortation (23-24)

TODAY’S TEXT:

Psalms 31:3 KJV – For thou [art] my rock and my fortress; therefore for thy name’s sake lead me, and guide me.

Psalms 31:3 ESV – For you are my rock and my fortress; and for your name’s sake you lead me and guide me;

TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL:

Psalms 31:3 – “David’s Recognition” (Part 1)

After David made his requests to the Lord, he begins to meditate on His Lord, recognizing His great works that He performed on David’s behalf…

For thou [art] my rock and my fortress;

David understood that His Lord was his Rock (foundation) and Fortress (place of refuge and protection), which allowed him to stand during the storms of life. David knew that the Lord is the only One that offered true stability in the midst of the upheavals of this world…

Matthew 7:24-27 KJV – “Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.

And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.”

Please keep in mind that David had just previously (vs 2) asked the Lord to…

be thou my strong rock, for an house of defence to save me.

In this verse (vs 3) David, by faith, is acknowledging that the Lord will do that which he had requested. He asked for the Lord to be his rock and house of defense and, now, David is acknowledging that the Lord was fulfilling those roles in his life.

therefore for thy name’s sake lead me, and guide me.

When we stop and consider the Lord’s grace in answering our prayers and actively sustaining us in times of trials, many times, we seek a closer walk with Him. David developed this heart of appreciation, which is shown to us by his desire to follow the Lord (“lead me”) and allow the Lord to instruct him in His ways (“guide me”).

Summary Of Our Study

In this text, we see David setting a wonderful example for each one of us during times of hardship in our lives.

David, though His eyes of faith, prayed knowing that the Lord would answer him. He recognized the Lord’s wonderful workings in his life. And finally, he appreciated all the Lord was doing for him which led David to a closer walk with his Lord.

When we pray, do we truly believe He will answer us?

Are we aware of the ways the Lord is working in our lives, even in the midst of the trials?

Do we appreciate all He is doing in our lives, which then leads us to a closer walk with Him?

By God’s grace may we all seek to follow this wonderful example set by David during the storms of life.
