“Why Do Many Christians’ Not Share the Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ ??”

Luke 10:2-3 Then He said to them, “The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.Go your way; behold, I send you out as lambs among wolves.  (NKJV)

At our men’s Bible study a few days ago, we were studying the book of Acts, specifically chapter 2 on the Day of Pentecost…and how the coming of the Holy Spirit gave the Disciples (and all Christians from that moment on), an amazing power, and what should be a burning desire to share the “good news” message of the cross with all those in need of God’s saving grace…  In Peter’s famous first sermon, after being filled with the Holy Spirit…scripture tells us this, in…

Acts 2:38…&…40-41…  Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.   40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, “Be saved from this perverse generation.” 41 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them.  (NKJV)

The question was asked in our Bible study, as to why we as believers don’t always share the Gospel of Christ, when God gives us the opportunity, and we see someone in need…   We most times lack the overwhelming sense of urgency, and the God given burning desire to share the Gospel, like the Disciples…but why ??   I shared my own personal testimony, which many of you might have heard before…where I spent the first 7+ years after God graced me with salvation, only sharing the Gospel of Christ twice…  You can read more about how God used a sermon by REV. C.H. Spurgeon from 1859, to awaken me to the fact that I wasn’t living for Christ, and what I did about it…  (See 1. Below)

Later on that day in my Q/T reading, I came across the opening scripture… Luke 10:2-3 “The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few”…  Jesus had the same problem we face today…trying to get His Disciples motivated to share the Gospel of the Kingdom of heaven…  Keep in mind, that Jesus’ Disciples didn’t have the Holy Spirit permanently dwelling with-in them, like we do today as “born again” Christians…   We as redeemed Christians were filled with the Holy Spirit at the moment God graced us with salvation…

I then spent about half an hour a day on an app I came across at the end of last year, that can be searched by typing… “Read the Bible in one year”…and looking for a red “B”, (Alpha International)… (See link at 2. below)   I can’t say enough about this version for reading the Bible in a year, because along with reading God’s amazing Word, there is a 10 minute audio commentary done by Nicky Gumbel, the Vicar of HTB Church in London… Nicky was the originator of Alpha, back in 1990 (See 3. Below)   I love his British accent…but with Nicky’s clear, down to earth teaching, along with God’s inspiring Word, I look forward to reading what God has for me to learn each and every day…

Nicky’s commentary for the day was titled… “Beautiful Feet”, with the New Testament portion from Romans 10:5-11:10…  The key verses from this scripture:

Romans 10:9-10…  that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.  (NKJV)

Romans 10:14-15…   How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written:

“How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace,
Who bring glad tidings of good things!”
(NKJV)

With this being the third time in one day, reading about the sharing of the Gospel of Christ, I knew the Holy Spirit was urging me to write about why so many of us Christians don’t do as we were commanded to do by Jesus, in His last spoken words before ascending into heaven to sit at the right hand of God the Father, in…

Mathew 28:19-20…  Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.  (NKJV)

It is the Holy Spirit that will urge us to share the good news of the Gospel of Christ…  And He will not only answer our prayers to send us someone we can witness to…the Holy Spirit will give us the right words, filled with Christ’s love for those He urges us to speak to…  But unlike me for the better part of my first 7 years as a redeemed child of God…God must be first in our lives… Sin will keep us from perfect fellowship with the Lord…  We must confess our sins (1 John 1:9), to again be filled with the Holy Spirit, as the apostle Paul pens in…

Ephesians 5:18-20…  And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, 20 giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,  (NKJV)

My friends…this being filled with the Holy Spirit (unlike the one time filling of the Holy Spirit at the moment the new believer is graced with salvation), is a day by day (sometimes moment by moment ) spiritual walk with the Lord…  It is also called “Walking in the Spirit” (Galatians 5:16), or being Spirit led…with us obeying the guidance and instructions of the Holy Spirit that God has given to each believer as a lifelong Helper, Comforter, Protector, and all the other names that can be used to describe God, the Holy Spirit… (See 4. Below)

Our spiritual walk with the Lord will be sweet fellowship with Him, as long as we don’t let sin break this fellowship…  God hates sin, and as the Bible promises in…Hebrews 12:5-11…God will chastise and even scourge a believer living in sin, until they have confessed, repented of…and turned from their sin…  We see the result of those who were living in sin, who receive God’s spiritual peace, once they have regained fellowship through confession and repentance of their sin, in this scripture…

Hebrews 12:11…  Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.   (NKJV)

We cannot have absolute God given peace in our lives (the third of the 9 fruit of the Spirit – Galatians 5:22-23)…unless we live Christ centered lives, allowing the Holy Spirit to take total control of all that we say and do…  It is only then, as I can personally testify, that the Spirit filled Christian will be able to love everyone around them…even those screaming in their face…Matthew 5:43-44…   And it is the Spirit filled Christian who will have the burning desire (like the Disciples of Christ after Pentecost) to share their own testimony and the Gospel of Christ, every time they see the need and have the chance…even to those in their family that in their own flesh they would never want to create friction, by sharing the Gospel…

How can we call ourselves obedient Christians…and not love those around us enough to witness to them ??  It’s easy not to share, when Satan overpowers our flesh, and tells us not to be witnesses for Christ, because of the hurt feelings and the rejection we might encounter when we share our faith…

My friends…we can and should share the Gospel, every chance we get !!  This can be done with the help of the Holy Spirit, who is allowed to reign with total control of the Christian who has totally submitted their life to God…

We can keep Satan in check, as we read in what the apostle James pens in…

James 4:7-8…  Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.  (NKJV)

Heavenly Father, I pray now, for all true believers, that they come before You with a contrite heart and godly sorrow, for any and all sins (including the sin of omission for not sharing the Word, as commanded – see 5. below)…  Help us Father, to put the love and concern for the eternal destiny of those around us who don’t know Christ as their personal Lord and Savior, ahead of any fear that we might experience by sharing Your “good news” message of grace, through saving faith alone in Your Son Jesus Christ…   I pray for this Spirit filled power of the Holy Spirit to fall upon all of Your redeemed children, in Jesus’ most precious name…Amen…

Blessings in Christ,  bruce
