“What Does Dying to Self Mean ??”

As a Christian, what does dying to self mean ??  See what we are taught in God’s Word, below…

Mark 9:34-35When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. 35 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it.” (NKJV)

The absolute key to living a Christ centered life, is to deny our own will…and seek the Lord’s will for our life…  We have to die to self, which the opening scripture tells us, with these words… “For whoever desires to save his life will lose it”

There are many scripture verses that tell us about the need to “die to self”…  You can find some of these at the link in 1. below…   In my humble opinion, I believe this scripture by the Apostle Paul, explains this dying to self the best, in…

Romans 6:8-11…  Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, 9 knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him. 10 For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. 11 Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.  (NKJV)

Being dead to sin does not mean that we will no longer sin…  It means that if we are doing our best to live for Christ, we will confess any sin as soon as possible, to again be practically righteous in God’s eyes…  1 John 1:9…  If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (NKJV)

We as Christians should be striving to live as a disciple of Christ…  How do we do this ??  Jesus tells us in…  John 8:31-32…  Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”  (NKJV)

Friends…it is by reading, studying, and digesting God’s Word, that we as Christians learn how we are to live lives pleasing to God…  Spending time in the Word is also the only way to systematically put on ALL of God’s spiritual armor, in order to stand firm against Satan’s attacks…Ephesians 6:10-20…  (See 2. Below)

You say you are not reading your Bible on a regular basis ??  You will not be feeding your spirit, as Jesus tells His Disciples (and us), in…

Matthew 4:4 (and Luke 4:4)… But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”  (NKJV)

Satan will deceive you into believing that you don’t need to spend time EVERY DAY in God’s Word…  So submit your life to God…spend time in prayer and in the Word every day…and you will be on your way to pleasing God, and keeping Satan in check…through the supernatural power of the Holy Spirit…

I spent a day writing how I am personally able to do my best to remain Spirit filled (Ephesians 5:18-20), and living for the Lord, at the link below in 3. titled…”God’s Duo”…   I praise God for the power of the Holy Spirit to fight my battles for me !!

Blessings in Christ,  bruce
